To Hell with Roland

Today’s gem, from a 1965 textbook on editing:
How to get over, how to escape from, the besotting particularity of fiction. ‘Roland approached the house; it had green doors and window blinds; and there was a scraper on the upper step.” To hell with Roland and the scraper!”—Robert Louis Stevenson, Letters

"To hell with Roland" seems to be the attitude of David Shields in Reality Hunger -- throw out the story and just keep the message. But I don't think the message has much weight without the story.
